Marathi Marriage Biodata: Format, What to Include and Common Mistakes
In Marathi matchmaking, the biodata — lagnacha biodata or parichay patra — is almost always the first thing another family sees about you. It gets forwarded on WhatsApp, printed for a melava, and passed to relatives before anyone has spoken.
Most biodatas fail in one of two directions. Either they are so brief that a family cannot tell whether it is worth responding, or so long that nobody reads past the first page. This is a guide to getting it right.
The standard sections
A Marathi marriage biodata generally follows a recognised order. Families scan for these in roughly this sequence, so keeping to it makes yours easier to read:
Personal details — full name, date of birth, birth time and place, height, complexion, blood group.
Religion and community — caste and sub-caste, kul, gotra, and devak where your family observes it.
Education — highest qualification, institution, and year.
Occupation — role, organisation, work location, and income if your family is comfortable stating it.
Family details — father's and mother's names and occupations, siblings and their marital status, native place, and often the maternal uncle's (mama) family.
Kundli information — rashi, nakshatra, gan, nadi, and whether there is mangal dosha.
Expectations — a short, honest note on what you are looking for.
Contact — one phone number, and who it belongs to.
Start with the invocation, if your family does
Many Marathi biodatas open with a line invoking the family deity — श्री गणेशाय नमः, or the name of your kuldaivat. It is not required, but it signals to a traditional family that yours observes the same customs, and it costs one line.
How much detail is the right amount
One page is the target. Two if the family details genuinely need it. Anything longer and the parts that matter get lost.
The most common cause of bloat is a long paragraph about personality — "I am a fun-loving person who believes in family values." Every biodata says this, so it distinguishes nobody. Two specific lines about how you actually spend your time do more than ten lines of adjectives.
Income is the section families most often ask about. There is no obligation to state a figure. A band, or simply your role and organisation, is normal and lets the other family judge for themselves.
Choosing the photograph
The photo carries more weight than anything else on the page, and this is where most biodatas lose people:
Use a recent, clear photo taken in daylight, ideally against a plain background.
Face visible, looking at the camera. No sunglasses, no heavy filters.
Traditional or formal clothing is usual, but ordinary neat clothes are perfectly acceptable.
Avoid group photos with others cropped out — it is always obvious.
One good photo beats four mediocre ones.
Mistakes that get a biodata ignored
Overstating anything. Height, income and qualifications get checked, and being caught out ends the conversation permanently.
Leaving out kundli details when your community expects them — many families simply will not proceed without rashi and nakshatra.
A blurry or very old photograph. A five-year-old photo creates an awkward first meeting.
No contact person named. State whose number it is — the candidate's, a parent's, or a sibling's — so the other family knows who they are calling.
Sending it as an unreadable screenshot. A PDF stays sharp when forwarded; a screenshot of a screenshot does not.
If this is a second marriage
Be straightforward. State that it is a second marriage, whether it followed divorce or bereavement, and whether there are children. Families who are open to it will read on; families who are not would have found out anyway, and later is worse for everyone. A brief factual line is better than an explanation.
Print or digital
Both, in practice. A printed copy is still expected at a melava or a first meeting. A PDF is what actually travels — forwarded between families on WhatsApp, sometimes several times over, which is how most proposals reach people now.
Keep the file name sensible. Sneha_Patil_Biodata.pdf gets opened; IMG_20260714.pdf often does not.
