Do WhatsApp updates cost anything?

No, there's no charge for receiving updates.

Can updates go to a different number from my profile?

Yes. Connect from Settings → WhatsApp Updates using the WhatsApp you want — the number that sends the code gets the updates.

Can one WhatsApp number get updates for two profiles?

A WhatsApp number gets updates for one profile at a time. Connecting it from another profile moves the updates to that profile.
